Photographing the Milky Way from the UK: Imaging the Milky Way from the UK can be tricky, but definitely worth the effort! in this talk I cover all aspects of trying to get the best Milky Way shots from the UK using basic camera equipment. Most of my Milky Way photography has been done from Oxfordshire where there is considerable light pollution so I also cover the image processing techniques that have worked for me. Part of this talk covers material which was featured in an article that I wrote for the October 2018 issue of Sky at Night magazine. Even if you aren’t interested in astronomy in general, the Milky Way can provide a dramatic backdrop to any nightscape photograph.

Photographing Lightning: In this talk, I take you on some of my adventures chasing thunder storms from Oxfordshire, to capture some breathtaking lightning images and timelapse videos. as well as some interesting cloud formations. All of my images were taken with an entry level DSLR but I also show some techniques you can use to capture lightning with a mobile phone camera.

22nd April
Speaker - Kevin Day - "Call to Duty"

Embedded in a party delivering humanitarian aid to refugees that had found themselves stranded there, Kevin’s trip of five days was made in mid winter and started on Christmas Day! His images bring to life what we hear briefly referred to on the television news, and showed the cold and difficult conditions. These were not, somewhat understandably, helped by many of the Greeks’ reluctance to accept these huge influxes of refugees. Kevin explains the systems implemented to try to ensure that the food, clothing, blankets and tents were fairly distributed, a task that meant his team were often working twenty hour days. Rather humbling to see the resilience on the faces of the mainly Syrian subjects and the stoic way they seemed to maintain standards right down to their dress.

Some additional info relating to this talk follows:

RAF Mount Farm was a satellite of RAF Benson during the war, and was immediately East of the village of Berinsfield. It was operated by the US Air Force who flew P38 Lightnings, P51 Mustangs and Spitfire Mk XI on photo reconnaissance flights over Germany. Virtually nothing remains of it today, but you can still see the outline of it on Google Earth - see the PDF attached.

Fortunately one of the Americans based there, a Flight Surgeon by the name of Jim Savage, shot some 16mm film which survived.

The footage can be seen here. Note you can see Wittenham Clumps at 2min 20sec

In 2005 a short film was put together documenting an incident at Mount Farm.

5th August
Gareth Martin - A DAY AT CWMORTHIN, a study in monochrome.
Picture
Picture
Martin's story in his own words:
"The day, in April 2014, started with Pugwash, my Westie, and I leaving Port Talbot at 5.30am. The weather was
really bad all the way up there. I arrived dressed for the day although it was just drizzle at this point. The first
picture, called House on a Hill, shows it wasn’t raining
I used a Zukio 28mm – 90mm on an Olympus E-5. Now, I knew my camera was waterproof so I took a gamble
and kept it mounted on my tripod all day through the downpours and misty conditions. The only part of me that
got wet was my sleeve which I was using it to wipe the lens.
The pictures were taken with auto focus so they are all sharp and blurry. That’s an odd thing to say! The rain
droplets on the lens were wiped off and sometimes became a smear or smudged. For me, this added to the
atmosphere of the day seen in the pictures.
After a few months, I wondered how I was going to present the pictures to Camera Clubs where I do print and
digital talks. So, I used Silver Efex, using different filters such as Pinhole on some images, and adding grain to
really grunge them up and show to the world that, even in the digital age, we can still have grain. I wanted to
show that this form of editing has a place in today’s photography.
I made twenty-two prints, printed them small and mounted them on 50x40 mounts. I’ve been told that I have an
F panel in the making. That would be nice."

19th August
Catherine Knee - Reality is Overated

"We take a gentle start with some costumed portraiture, and wind our way through the sinister and surreal and end up with contemporary artistic images.
I am a photographic artist who was born in Zimbabwe but have lived in UK for over ten years now. I love fantasy and my talk encompasses my love of this genre. We start with some costumed portraiture and the meander into fantasy creatures. There is some contemporary work, and also a small splash of darker images. This talk is heavy with images that are highly manipulated, and reflect my love of processing to get what I want and not what my camera gives me."
